AN EARLY 14-BORE PERCUSSION DOUBLE-BARRELLED SPORTING GUN BY JAMES PURDEY, serial no. 386,
circa 1830 and probably converted from tubelock, with laminated 29 1/2in. barrels with makers mark below for Charles Lancaster, damascus top-rib signed 'J. PURDEY, PRINCES STREET, LEICESTER SQUARE, LONDON', bead fore-sight, platinum line and vented plugs at breech, the top-tang engraved with borderlines, scrolls and feathered serpents, recoloured bar-action locks signed 'PURDEY' and engraved with further feathered serpents, a large plugged hole present on each bar probably from a previous tubelock or self priming apparatus, patent external safety interceptors behind the recoloured replacement hammers, each engraved 'SAFETY' with 'PATENT' below, walnut half-stock chequered at the wrist, replacement recoloured fixed grip safety, expertly reblued and re-engraved iron heel-plate and trigger-guard and original brass mounted ramrod
